I had heard of bobbin lacemaking since I was very young, but unfortunately never found anyone who would teach me this craft. I took crochet lessons since I was nine years old and I taught my four sisters how to do crocheted lace. Years later I have taken knitting classes and I can knit with ease and I love it.

One day after talking to my sister, she mentioned that one of the secretaries at her job spent most of her lunch break doing bobbin lace. I asked her how she learned and my sister was put in contact with a teacher who taught bobbin lace in the University of Puerto Rico. After that everything is history!

I asked my sister to buy everything to get me started and she happily bought the materials and sent them to me. At that time, I was living in New York and no one seemed to know anything about bobbin lace. I began to do research, finding books, pamphlets and whatever I could to teach myself this intrincated art.

I found out about the Finger Lakes Guild Conference and I attended. Of course, everyone knew much more than I. I felt so terribly sad. Then, I bought the book “The technique of Bobbin Lace” by Doris Southard and that did it. After that time, I continue to make lace and noone can stop me!

The great thing about this book is that Ms. Southard guides you with step by step directions. If you follow her instructions you will be making beautiful lace before you know it. Your family and frieds will be amazed, and you will be so happy you have learned to make one of the most beautiful crafts ever existed! Good Luck to you.

i love bobbin lacemaking!
